Is America's "Democracy" Failing?
by Thom Holmes
At about the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution
in 1787, a Scottish history professor by the name of Professor Alexander
Tyler had this to say about "The Fall of the Athenian Republic" over 2,000
years ago...
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only
exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse
(generous gifts) from the public treasury. From that moment on, the
majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from
the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over
loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.
"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred
years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to
spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to
liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from
complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back into
bondage."
The comments above by Professor Alexander Tyler are right on target.
And we are heading that way due to ignorance of our heritage and our true
form of government. Our founding fathers did NOT give us a democracy, but
rather a republic. We, the people, MUST demand that the Constitutional
restraints on all three branches of this republic be adhered to and that the
checks and balances between the three branches be re-instituted.
Many Christians want to improperly point to the passages in the Bible
that say "obey the government" and claim they cannot revolt against unjust
laws that are enacted or against tyrannical judicial rulings that are handed
down. Where Christians are mistaken is that our Republic is structured in
such a way that WE ARE THE RULERS AND WE CONTROL THE GOVERNMENT! If we do
not live up to the responsibility God has given us SOON, and hold our
democratically elected public SERVANTS accountable to the Constitution and
the rule of law, then we truly will no longer be a republic.
This country CAN experience a renewal of freedom, but it will take an
awakening by its people, Christians primarily. A 21st Century revolution
must begin soon or we will certainly go the way of all previous
"Democracies".
